I remember reading this tale – then titled Fairer-than-a-Fairy – in Andrew Lang’s The Yellow Fairy Book when I was a little girl and loved the fact that her dog and her cat helped her triumph. The original story was rather long, so I cut it back to its essentials while bringing Fairer-than-a-Fairy’s courage and cleverness to the fore.

In other tales in this book, we have chosen to use the spelling ‘faery’ as it seemed to conjure the tall, dangerous, otherworldly creatures of the Fae better than ‘fairy’, which seems to connote beings that are both tiny and benign. However, in this story we have kept the more usual spelling to maintain the linkage between ‘fairer’ and ‘fairy’ in the heroine’s name.
